It shows how vast the Internet is that not just a website but a whole organisation is able to exist and provide an online service to millions, yet even more millions have never even heard of it. Esty started small and has grown year on year to be a sizeable organisation with literally millions of users and tens of millions of visitors.

Etsy is not a million miles away from eBay in terms of the eBay shops people can set up but the difference is, that’s all it does. It provides a brilliant platform for people to setup and manage their own online shops from which to sell their products.

According to Etsy it’s a place to “buy and sell handmade or vintage items, art and supplies on Etsy; the world’s most vibrant handmade marketplace.” It features artists from literally all over the world, you can find almost anything and everything.

For example, if you’re a collector of hard-to-get-hold-of merchandise for all the weird and wonderful things people like to collect merchandise for, you’ll like Etsy because a lot of the sellers offer similar objects for a lower price (and the handmade items can be better quality).

etsyhornAlso, because so much is beautifully hand crafted by some of the planet’s most incredibly talented individuals, where else would you find something as beautiful and innovative and creative as a hand-made wooded ‘horn’ to play music through from your iPhone? No high-tech electronic, power-sucking gadgetry here, just pure acoustic genius carved from wood. Ok, so this particular item is not available to ship to the UK (I’m sure there’s a way around this) but the point is it’s a thing of beauty and Etsy is the perfect place to market it.

So, considering you’ve never heard of Etsy, here’s a few stats that will surprise you:

Founded in 2005 and profitable since 2009, Etsy is based in the USA with 450 employees in offices in New York, San Francisco, Berlin, London, Dublin, and Toronto. It has more than 30 million members with over 1 million active shops listing more than 20 million items with total sales in 2012 reaching $895 million across 200 countries.
Oh, and it has more than 60 million unique visitors – per month.
